Jorrig I have the same issue.... I'm currently running a FAST ASYNC Tournament with 16 players.
I have found that in FAST ASYNC with motivated players who check the game at least morning and evening - the time-out problem is manageable - as long as you don't have what I call the "3-continent problem". Here is a link to a utility that illustrates the problem visually:

If you have at least one player in AUS/ASIA, one player in THE AMERICAS and one player in EUROPE - there are not enough shared waking hours to keep the game moving.
In my current tournament we have mostly North Americans, but we also have and Aussie and a number of Europeans. Any combination of two of these time zones is manageable. We just completed Stage 2 with 24 games (6 games in each group of players) and only had one time-out.
However, in Stage 3 (which we are about to start) we have one group that has the Aus - USA - UK problem. I'm waiting to start Stage 3 until I can come up with a resolution...
So - yes - an answer / fix from CGE would be nice!
In the future, I'll likely have to restrict my FAST ASYNC tournaments a range of time zones that aren't so wildly disparate.
