This is an "Open" so can non-Australians compete? Or do you want Aussies only?

      a month later

      Dear players,
The 256 slots for the 2021 Aussie Open have filled up with more than a month before the official start! Well done and good choice!
Players can see now their round 1 group competitors and all the tournament groups and players on this worksheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15_r_piGEfnj-TU39_uWLP5qaju0OS71eFEZ-3UZVkIo/edit?pli=1#gid=1478461313

A few comments after the seeding:
First round's "Death Group" seems to be Group 8, which looks particularly difficult with JeJenan, DJParsons and the 2020 winner (treitze) in the same group !!! A tall task to qualify for the next round for Fall87 - the 4th player in this group, but not impossible.
The highest-seeded player is LaoHuang with 60 exp and the lowest-seeded player is Praetorianer at 46. The player with the lowest experience is Chris_Bray @ 14. Good luck!!
danodan - one of last year's semi-finalists and the last year's great surprise is in a tough group (22) and starts again as the underdog...
Last year's other finalists: silent_x111, tomaszchwiszczuk and pajada face difficult draws in groups 3, 55 and 62 and should silent_x111 and pajada win their groups, they'll meet again in the next round...

Hope you'll enjoy the tournament and thank you for participating.

      Hi Diogenes,

Absolute fantastic of you for organizing this tournament.
I assume that the start date is still in 26th January 2021 or will it be earlier?

Gr33ny yes, the starting date is 26th Jan. Cheers and good luck.

Good luck and fun to everybody!
And thank you Diogenes for managing this wonderful tournament!

Diogenes ...and if I finish second in my group, I could be in that game with silent_x111 and pajada! :-O Thanks for the advice, I'll try hard to win my game then! πŸ™‚

A few days late with my reply but I was travelling last week (for the first time since March 2020, I crossed a state border). Thanks, Melon6688. You're right Jorrig, that would be an interesting group (match). Meanwhile, group 31 was the fastest off the blocks. Well done FreddyCrugerKiller and chihsien and good luck in the next round(s).

Hi players, group 36 has encountered an unusual situation. 3 players have timed out. I will not promote any of the time out players to the next round and a decision on which player from the 3rd or 4th spot will take the second qualifying place will be taken once all the games are concluded.

              Hya players,

The first stage of the 2021 Aussie Open has ended, with 128 players moving through the second stage of the tournament.
38 seeded players made it through the 2nd round, all 4 finalists of the last year’s Aussie Open are through, also a few players with experience rankings under 30 have qualified with Jusaz @ 27th level being the least experienced of them – well done and good luck!
I decided to award myself the remaining vacant spot left open after 3 players in group 36 timed-out, as your organiser.
No easy groups, but some look tougher than others (on paper, anyway), especially groups 2 ,8, 17 and 26.
Good luck and let the second round of games begin!!

Diogenes well done and good luck!

Cheers! I was thrilled to make it through even the first round, been losing a lot lately 😊 I guess playing only one match per round increases the chances of upsets somewhat.

Round 3 is away. Good luck to the remaining 64 players. All four 2020 finalists have made it through. Two of them are meeting in group 2. 19 seeded players left from the initial 64.

                  7 days later

Interesting situation in group 9. One of the players timed out early on and the remaining 3 decided to consult with the organiser for setting up a 3 player game instead of continuing the 4 player game with an AI. As all three were on the same page, I had no issues with their proposal, so off they went. The match has finished and the first two (qualifying) spots were taken by Sandwhale and zadokk, which meant that pajada - one of the finalists last year has been eliminated. The points difference between places 2 and 3 was only 2 points. Congrats to Sandwhale and zadokk !

The 4th round is on! Congrats to the last 32 competitors!
3 out of 4 finalists of the 2020 Aussie Open have been eliminated in the last round...with silent_x111 showing remarkable consistency.
10 seeded players left in the comp. Tough groups all around but keep your eye on groups 1 and 7.
                    Best of luck!

Welcome to the Quarters! Congratulations to the promoted players!
All 4 of the 2020 AO finalists have been eliminated, so it's certain we'll have a new champion. silent_x111 bowing down in group 1.
Nearly half of the remaining players are seeded players, confirming the tournament's methodology.
                      Best of luck!

Congratulations to the 2021 Aussie Open finalists - borostar, Dirkules, mushan and Swampzombie! Great semis games. May the best one win!
